Question for moms of kids with VP shunts

Is this normal? Elijah has developed a bruise right above/on top of the scar where his abdominal incision was for the end of his shunt. I don't think there was any kind of trauma to that area. You can feel a hard bump under the skin that feels like it is the end of the tubing. It moves when you press on it. It's not tender and he doesn't mind for me to touch it. I think I should probably email his neurosurgeon and ask, but I'm asking Dr. Internet first. :cD

The bruise doesn't photograph well, but since it has gotten darker since Friday when I first noticed it, the camera in my phone picked it up tonight at bedtime. The dark shadowy area below the bruise is part of his scar from the shunt placement.

What do you think? Has something like this ever shown up on your kids?

The bump at the end is normal. Haven't had a bruise like that and it's kind of a strange place to bruise--I'd call just in case.

I'd email Dr. Grant. It's possible that the tubing has shifted so that the end is poking him and causing bruising. Let's hope it turns out to be nothing!

I was thinking it was probably better to email in case. It's probably nothing, but it's better to be safe. It doesn't bother Elijah at all and he's having no symptoms of any shunt problems, so I don't think there's a clog at that end or anything. I just emailed Dr. Grant, so we'll see what he thinks. I took a better picture with my real camera instead of my phone.

At least it's just a quick x-ray to see where the tubing is - not the hassle of a CT scan if Dr. Grant feels that it needs a looking at.

I got an email back from Elijah's neurosurgeon who said, who knows! :cD He said it's a sensitive area because the tubing goes in extra deep above the abdominal incision and to just watch it for progressive swelling. The bruise had worsened from Friday to Monday, but it was looking a little better this morning. So I guess it was just a bruise.
